Overcoming your inner “I am not like other girls” complex is one of the most important things you can do as you reach adulthood. The day you stop hating the colour pink just for being girly is the day you unlock a better life.
However, there always are things that are mainly considered “girly” that any person can dislike - because they just suck (in that person's eyes). For me, that thing is Taylor Swift.
Well, to call this wildly successful singer “a thing” feels more than rude, to be frank. But to get to the point: I hate her.
It feels terrifying to admit that, especially on social sites like TikTok where fans of hers don't hesitate to bully and threaten anyone who dares to say anything negative about her, even when it comes to matters such as Taylor overusing her private jet (which has nothing to do with her music, obviously). I have personally witnessed a guy get doxxed because he posted a video about Taylor not being the best ally to the LGBTQI+ community based on her “hanging out” with known homophobes and transphobes.
What prompted this confession was a post on Tumblr about the album The Tortured Poets Department. The user, who shall remain nameless, talks about the importance of being smart when listening to the aforementioned album because “otherwise it's not for you”. We can all agree how crazy that sounds because it is just an album, it isn't a deciding factor for considering someone intelligent, or dumb (on the opposite end of the spectrum).
To quote another user: “yes, this album has some of the best songs she has ever written but I still feel like we forgot about the previous ones way too quickly.”
At this point, Taylor Swift is on the list of artists I have blocked on Spotify, alongside of Justin Bieber and multiple bands from my home country. Did I like some of her previous music? Yes. But ever since the “Taylor’s Version” albums started to come out, I had to block the tag #taylorswift on every social media app I use.
I hope I am not the only person who feels this way about her. But even if I was, well, there’s nothing we can do about it. Unless “Swifties” decide to calm down, I will stay out of the TS circles.
